Japan Summer Exchange Program 2022 — Trip Overview
On June 28, 2022, a group of 20 students and 5 chaperones embarked on an unforgettable cultural journey to Japan, balancing immersive learning experiences, historical exploration, and incredible adaptability in the face of unique travel challenges.
Fukushima & Community Resilience
The program began in Nakoso and Fukushima, where the group stayed at the Seki no Yu resort. Students took part in a two-day tour focused on environmental recovery and disaster management following the 2011 nuclear power plant damage. In Ohkuma-Machi, students gained firsthand insight into community revitalization as they observed local efforts to build new housing, schools, infrastructure, and medical facilities from the ground up.
Exploring Kansai & Cultural Excursions
Moving on to the Kansai region, the group used the Shin-Osaka Youth Hostel as a base. Leveraging the Shinkansen and JR Passes for seamless daily travel, students explored an array of historic and cultural landmarks across Hiroshima, Miyajima, Nara, Uji, Fushimi-Inari, Himeji Castle, Kobe, and Kyoto. Highlights included hands-on activities such as a traditional Soba noodle-making lesson in Sanda City.
Overcoming Challenges with Care & Leadership
When positive COVID-19 cases emerged during the Kansai portion of the trip, the leadership team swiftly implemented strict health precautions. To ensure maximum student comfort and safety, isolated students were cared for in dedicated hostel rooms and local Airbnb accommodations with daily health checks, delivered meals, and regular updates sent home to parents. With assistance from local contacts and program leaders adjusting plans dynamically, the group safely managed all health protocols while continuing to engage in rich cultural experiences.
Tokyo Exploration & Mt. Fuji Ascent
On July 13, the team arrived at the Tokyo Central Youth Hostel for the final leg of the journey. Students immersed themselves in Japanese culture through a Kabuki theatre performance, a hands-on sushi-making class, and visits to iconic districts including Harajuku, Akihabara, Shibuya, Asakusa, Ginza, and Roppongi. During a visit to Tokyo Tower, students also visited nearby Zoujyou-ji Temple to leave flowers during a national moment of remembrance. Additionally, a dedicated group of six students completed an adventurous climb to the 8th station of Mt. Fuji.
By August 2, all students and chaperones successfully completed the program and returned home safely to the United States with lasting memories, deeper global awareness, and strong bonds forged through shared adventure.
